Program Objectives

Overall aim

Move from a student's mindset — a consumer of information — to a professional's mindset: a producer of value. You should leave with evidence, not exposure.

How these objectives are met

These four objectives apply to every intern, whatever their major. They are deliberately written to be field-independent: none of them names a tool, a technology or a discipline.

Each is met across two parts of the internship. The general phase builds the shared baseline that every intern needs regardless of field — conduct, communication, process, and the working standards of the company. The major-specific phase is where your own discipline is applied in depth, and it is the part that carries most of the technical weight of O1 and produces the substantial deliverable behind O3. The objectives stay constant; what changes between majors is the evidence produced against them.

O1 — Technical and practical skills

By the end, you can apply what you studied to real work, using the tools your field actually uses.

• Turn academic knowledge into work that holds up in a live business setting
• Follow and explain a real operational workflow from end to end
• Work competently in the core tools of your field
• Use current workplace tools, including AI assistants, within the company's safe-usage rules
• Find answers independently — documentation, manuals, official sources — before asking

The general phase establishes the shared working baseline. The depth expected in your own discipline is developed and assessed in the major-specific phase.

O2 — Professional conduct and behaviour

By the end, you conduct yourself as a colleague, not a guest.

• Punctuality, appearance and conduct consistent with a professional workplace
• Clear written and spoken communication; can run a meeting and document it usefully
• Takes initiative and adapts when priorities shift or pressure rises
• Works inside a team, and treats criticism as information rather than as a verdict

Taught in the general phase and expected of every intern equally. The major-specific phase tests it under real delivery pressure rather than in exercises.

O3 — Tangible achievements and deliverables

By the end, you have produced real, reviewed work with your name on it.

• Completes at least one substantial piece of work that delivers value to a real department or client
• Manages your own time and tasks against deadlines without being chased
• Offers reasoned improvement recommendations for the area you worked in
• Every deliverable is reviewed and signed off by a mentor, not self-declared

The substantial piece of work comes from the major-specific phase and differs by major. The standard it is judged against — reviewed, on time, genuinely useful — does not.

O4 — Career awareness and closing

By the end, you can describe your own work and your place in the market.

• Produces the final training report for both the university and the company
• Leaves with professional references and a working network
• Assesses your own performance honestly — strengths and gaps alike
• Has a grounded picture of what the job market expects of you

Common to all interns and met in the closing phase, drawing on whatever you produced in your major-specific work.
